In the past decade, hip hop music sales have gone through the roof. In spite of all the controversy that surrounds it, hip hop rap music has become more popular than ever.
Although hip hop music has been around since the 70s, it is only now coming into its own. The rhythms have gotten more sophisticated, the lyrics have gotten more daring and cutting edge, and the record labels have gotten more professional.
Nowadays, hip hop dance music is slick, catchy, and easy to listen to. Gangsta rap music is more real and dangerous than ever. There is even a genre called Nerdcore hip hop for super geeks who still love the flow of rap. No matter what you are looking for, you can find it in hip hop music.

Walking down the street the other day, I actually heard hip hop ring tones on some teenager's phone who I was passing. Although the kid with the hip hop music on her phone probably took it for granted, few people realize the humble origins of rap. Basically, it started with people just spinning records.
The great thing about rap music in general is that you can do it over anything. All you need is a beat, a tune, and a topic. DJs would layer track after track as emcees would freestyle over it with lyrics that they made up on the spot.
Although a lot of the work is done in the studios nowadays, and the music is pretty processed, there is still quite a bit of improvising going on in it. That is, after all, the surest way to bring inspiration into the tunes you are making. A rapper has to be able to hold his own and compose some fresh rhymes out of whatever comes into his head.
Of course, if you really want to appreciate music hip hop R&B, you have to see it live. If you can't see it live, however, music videos are the next best thing. Hip hop, you see, isn't only a music genre. It is a lifestyle. Although the media picks up on the negative aspects of it, they often ignore the positive elements that have been there all along.
Hip hop music, after all, doesn't have to be about crime and poverty. It can just as easily be about elevating yourself, gaining consciousness, and making your neighborhood or your world a better place.
