MP3 Music Downloads - Napster Creates a New Store
Well, what do you know. The major recording labels are finally getting the point. Technology is here to stay and it's only going to get better; a whole lot better I might add.
Let's face it. No matter how many law suits against old grandmothers are publicized, people are STILL going to share music and download media files from file sharing networks. Whether they're located here in the U.S. or Russia or Europe. There's simply no way to stop it.
Apple iTunes is also finally getting the message about DRM free coded music too. Amazon.com and a number of players are following the DRM free music download path that eMusic has as a staple.
The major recording labels it seems, are finally accepting the simple fact that they're absolutely NOT going to recoup their market share in music sales they lost in the past decade. Technology will not allow it.
So the smart thing to do is to acquiesce to the popular demand. Which is, we want not only MP3 music downloads of individual tracks without having to purchase the entire CD of songs we don't want, but we don't want any DRM restrictions and above all we want to not be limited to a membership in order to play our music. We also want the ability to transfer our "paid for" music from our iPods to our computer and be able to play it with ANY media player.
"It's great that we have finally gotten here," said Chris Gorog, Napster's chairman and chief executive. "It is really the beginning of a level playing field, which I think is essential for Napster, but also for the health of the digital music business in general."
So lots of things are changing and more to come on the horizon but with approval from the major recording labels Napster is headed in the right direction.
Napster claims to have over 6 million tracks and 760,000 subscribers. So they'll compete with iTunes at 99 cents per MP3 download and $9.95 for the full album. But they're really hoping a lot of folks will sign up for their unlimited MP3 downloads subscription, their real money maker.
So for iPod music downloads customers that like Napster, have no fear,
"Their Baaaack".
